Whidbey Community Foundation – Grant Reviewer Role Description

Position Overview: The Whidbey Community Foundation is seeking up to 3 dedicated individuals to join our Grants Committee as Grant Reviewers. As a Grant Reviewer, you will play a crucial role in evaluating applications for two of our primary funding programs: the Community Health Grant Program and the Nonprofit Capacity-Building Program. Your expertise and thoughtful analysis will help ensure that the Foundation funds initiatives that align with our mission and support the ongoing vitality of Whidbey Island.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Application Evaluation: Review and assess grant applications submitted to the Community Health Grant Program and Nonprofit Capacity-Building Program to determine their alignment with the Foundation’s priorities and eligibility criteria.
  • Collaboration: Participate in review meetings with fellow committee members to discuss applications, share insights, and reach consensus on funding recommendations.
  • Recommendation Reporting: Provide clear and well-supported recommendations to the Grants Committee based on your assessment of each application’s strengths, potential impact, and alignment with our funding priorities.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality about all applications, ensuring that sensitive information is protected throughout the review process.
  • Adherence to Ethics and Standards: Review applications with impartiality and integrity, avoiding any conflicts of interest and ensuring decisions are made based on merit and equity.

Qualifications and Experience: We are seeking candidates with the following:

  • A strong understanding of the Whidbey Island community’s needs and the Foundation’s mission.
  • Experience in nonprofit management, community health, program evaluation, or related fields.
  • Ability to critically evaluate grant proposals, including budgets, program plans, and expected outcomes.
  • Commitment to a fair, transparent, and inclusive decision-making process.
  • Availability to engage fully in the review process and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback.

Time Commitment: Grant reviewers can expect the following time commitment:

  • June to September/October: A 4-month period during which applications will be reviewed.
  • Training & Orientation: Approximately 1-2 hours at the beginning of the review cycle to familiarize yourself with the Foundation’s priorities, evaluation criteria, and review process.
  • Application Review: Review and assess approximately 25-30 applications (depending on capacity), requiring 12-15 hours of reading and evaluation time.
  • Review Meetings: Participate in 2-3 virtual or in-person review meetings (approximately 2-3 hours each) to discuss and finalize funding recommendations.
  • Site Visits (if applicable): In some cases, site visits to applicant organizations may be required, requiring 1-2 hours per visit.
