As the cost of living continues to rise and the economy remains uncertain, many families on Whidbey Island are struggling to meet basic needs. Whether it’s paying for utilities, purchasing necessary household items like a bed, or handling unexpected funeral expenses, there are gaps in financial support that leave our most vulnerable neighbors at risk. To help fill these gaps, the Whidbey Community Foundation (WCF), Goosefoot Community Fund, and Island Thrift have once again partnered to provide crucial assistance through the Essential Needs Program.
Now in its fifth year, the Essential Needs Program is a powerful collaboration between local organizations that directly supports families in need. Each year, this program fills financial gaps not covered by other assistance programs, providing a lifeline for those who are struggling to make ends meet.
How the Essential Needs Program Works
The funds raised for this program go directly to the Opportunity Council of Island County Service Center, which manages and distributes the money to households facing urgent financial needs. These funds help local families who are living at or below 30% of the county’s median income – people like teachers, shopkeepers, service workers, and other essential members of our community.
“This program has given us the freedom to help the most vulnerable members of our community, in MORE ways than we have ever been able to,” says Melissa Frasch-Brown, Director of the Opportunity Council Island County Service Center. “We are deeply grateful!”
A Community of Support
Thanks to the partnership between WCF, Goosefoot Community Fund, and Island Thrift, $70,000 has already been raised for the program this year. The two organizations have each contributed $25,000, while Island Thrift has generously donated $20,000. However, an additional $30,000 is needed by August 31st to reach this year’s fundraising goal and ensure continued support for local families
