The Next Decade… 2026-2036
Whidbey Island is Changing Faster Than Our Systems Can Keep Up
- Needs are rising across housing, health care, affordability, aging, childcare, and the environment.
- Government support is shrinking, leaving nonprofits to fill widening gaps.
- The greatest transfer of wealth in American history is underway — $125 trillion over the coming decades. Communities with strong community foundations will keep more of those resources working locally.
At the Same Time, New Opportunities Are Emerging:
- WCF is attracting new donors and fundholders.
- Nonprofits are seeking stronger partnerships and shared solutions.
- Community members are looking for a trusted institution to guide long-term investment in Whidbey’s future.
To meet this moment, WCF must grow from a young foundation into a mature, high-capacity civic institution — faster than the natural timeline. Community foundations support the nonprofits doing vital work every day, while connecting people and resources, building partnerships, and strengthening the systems that help communities thrive. For our first decade, WCF proved the value of a community foundation to Whidbey Island and became a trusted partner. As we enter our second decade, our role must expand.

Whidbey Needs a Community Foundation That:
- Supports individual causes while understanding and collaborating on whole-island needs and opportunities.
- Serves as a conduit for donor giving today and a destination for long-term investment in our future.
- Engages and inspires donors with discovering, managing, and amplifying their philanthropy.
- Stewards permanent resources that ensure Whidbey thrives for generations.
- Partners with nonprofit leadership to create the shared vision and capacity to adapt to rising needs, rapid change, and legacy giving.
- Focuses on whole-island issues, addressing the unique and shared needs of South, Central, and North Whidbey
