“Kids whose needs are met come to school ready to learn. Kids whose needs aren’t met come to school looking for those needs to be met.”
We heard this during our recent site visit at South Whidbey Elementary School—and it captures exactly why this work matters.
The South Whidbey Schools Foundation (SWSF) supports programs that fall outside public school funding, helping meet critical needs for local students. In 2025, SWSF received a $10,000 Community Health Grant (Year 2 renewal) to support a 10-hour/week mental health therapist at South Whidbey Elementary School (SWES)—currently the only school in the region without a dedicated counselor due to state budget cuts.
During the 2025–2026 school year, therapist Kathy Hein served 40 students at SWES. Fifteen received individual counseling, while 25 participated in group sessions—many centered on art therapy. She also provided 14 hours of parent support, which is especially important given the limited availability of therapists on the island.
During our visit, we also explored how to measure impact over time—looking at indicators like attendance and social-emotional learning survey results. These kinds of conversations are what make site visits especially meaningful, strengthening both the program and our shared understanding of what’s working.
In addition to this grant, SWSF received $1,000 from the Holiday Sculpture Fund in 2025.
