We recently visited the Island County Historical Society to learn more about a Nonprofit Capacity Building grant that supported critical security upgrades at its museum in Coupeville.
Through this grant, ICHS partnered with Whidbey Telecom to install new Wi-Fi-enabled security panels, motion and fire detectors, and cameras. While these upgrades may seem behind-the-scenes, they play an essential role in protecting the museum’s irreplaceable historical collections—along with ensuring the safety of visitors, staff, and volunteers who bring these spaces to life every day.
The need for these improvements was underscored by recent security incidents, prompting ICHS to take proactive steps to strengthen its systems. Like many small nonprofits stewarding public spaces, the Historical Society operates with limited capacity—making investments like this both necessary and, at times, difficult to prioritize without outside support.
Today, the installation is complete—an important milestone that brings both peace of mind and long-term protection for these community assets.
This is exactly where capacity building grants can make a meaningful difference. By funding infrastructure that might otherwise go overlooked, we help organizations not only respond to immediate needs but build a stronger, more resilient foundation for the future.
