Building a Legacy: Key Takeaways from Our Estate Planning Panel

Last month, I had the privilege of being part of the “Let’s Begin: Estate Planning and Legacy Giving” panel hosted by the Whidbey Community Foundation and sponsored by Casey Pleet Wealth Management at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club. I walked away feeling inspired and energized by the conversations between the panel and those in attendance.  As both a panelist and someone deeply passionate about helping people make lasting impacts in our community, the evening was a powerful reminder of why we do this work.

Key Insights from the Panel

The panel of experts in their fields offered valuable insights. Jeff Pleet, with over 40 years of experience in wealth management, broke down complex topics like Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) in a way that felt personal and accessible. His emphasis on the emotional side of giving was a poignant reminder that charitable giving is not just about taxes but about leaving a meaningful legacy.

Kate Szurek, a skilled estate planning attorney, shared clear advice on essential legal documents and explained the differences between wills and trusts. Her guidance gave attendees practical tools to start planning and ensure their wishes are carried out. She brought several handouts with more details to share.

George Saul, a long-time supporter, fund holder, and current board member of the Whidbey Community Foundation, spoke from the heart about the power of giving back and the role the Foundation plays in making local charitable giving easier and more impactful. His story reinforced the idea that leaving a legacy is about supporting the causes we care about, not just in the present but for future generations.

A Personal Connection to Legacy Giving

The event was especially meaningful to me because I’ve seen firsthand how legacy giving transforms communities. It’s not just about the paperwork—it’s about the deep, lasting impact our gifts can have on the causes and communities we care about. Jeff’s words about the emotional side of giving resonated with me deeply, as I know from experience that these decisions are about more than just assets; they’re about values and vision for the future.

Looking Ahead

The energy in the room was palpable. Attendees were engaged, asking insightful questions and expressing a renewed interest in getting their estate plans in order. I’m excited to see how many of them take the next step in their legacy journey.

Legacy giving is for everyone—not just the wealthy. It’s about ensuring the causes we care about continue to thrive long after we’re gone. As we move forward, I’m eager to help even more people create a meaningful impact through thoughtful estate planning and charitable giving.

Take the Next Step: Start Your Legacy Today

If this conversation has inspired you to begin planning your own legacy, I encourage you to take action now. Whether you’re just starting your estate plan or considering establishing a fund with the Whidbey Community Foundation, we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Creating a fund with the Foundation is a powerful way to ensure your values are passed on, and it’s easier than you might think. We can also share information on how to leave a bequest to your favorite charity. Let’s work together to build a legacy that benefits Whidbey Island for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the event. We hope to hold another similar one in South Whidbey toward the end of the year! I look forward to continuing this important conversation and helping more people leave their mark on our community.
